lbs of energy per pellet at the muzzle will retain,at 40 yds, a velocity of 652 fps with a retained energy of 1.19ft lbs. I prefer the W-W.A-A Trap and Skeet loads.for larger upland birds the handicap Trap loads rated at 1,413 fps with 5.86 Ft. If you don't wish to take the time or go to the expense of loading and testing.then I suggest that you stick with a proven commercial loading, proven to shoot well in most guns. I have a Parker 12 Ga that just loves a 1 1/4oz load of #5 lead shot at a muzzle velocity of 1300 fps.vary the shot size.up or down and fiddle with the velocity and one barrel(the modified) shoots high right with holes in the pattern you can fly a 747 thru. Not only will one shot size/load shot denser patterns, it may also shoot closer to the point of aim. To find this.you need to spend time on the range and with a patterning board and a variety of loadings.
Shotguns will often pattern a specific load and shot size better.much better than any other. if your Nitro Special is in shooting condition.any 2 3/4" 12 gauge load of "LEAD" shot should be OK to fire(absolutely NO steel shot in older doubles!!!!!) However, it doesn't always follow,in fact it seldom does, that any max load will be the best performer. When this gun was "new".say 1945 for the sake of this discussion, 4 dram equivelent loads were common.that would be a max blackpowder and shot loading.
